STORY BEHIND THE SONG*



*



Kenny Rogers and Dottie West's 1979 number one, "All I Ever Need Is You" is

another one of those tunes which had already made the rounds and had been on

record a couple of times before receiving the Rogers and West duo treatment.



According to co-writer Eddie Reeves, "I suppose that in the back of my mind - I

wrote that song for Rogers - because when I recorded the demo on the tune - I

was imitating Kenny. But he turned it down - then later recorded it with Dottie

West."



The song was previously recorded by Ray Charles and by Sonny and Cher.



"All I Ever Need Is You" was written by Jimmy Holiday and Eddie Reeves.



According to record producer Larry Butler, "We recorded the song for the

"Classics" album. We already had a load of ballads picked for the project but we

needed something different - a song with a sing-along feel so it was easy to

pick that one."



The single was produced by Larry Butler and entered the country music charts

February 17th, 1979 and was in the top slot on April 21st.*

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS







Q: The radio folks mentioned a TV show with Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell.

Do you have any information?

A: "Austin City Limits" will air a special - edited from the September 18th

Americana Music Association's Festival and Conference 12 Annual Honors and

Awards Show - featuring Emmylou and Rodney.



Q: I have heard that Loretta Lynn still does concerts but is she still

recording?

A: Loretta has completed several recording projects - including a Christmas

album, a gospel album and a CD of mountain songs, and is planning another album

project with producer Jack White - who produced her 2005 Grammy Award winning

album - "Van Lear Rose."



Q: I heard on the radio that Johnny Cash is going into the Hall Of Fame in

November. I thought he was already there!

A: Cash will be inducted into The Memphis Music Hall Of Fame on November

7th. He was indicted into The Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1980.



Q: There was a comedy record on the radio years ago about 'It Tickles." I

don't remember the singer's name. But a friend of mine says that Buck Owens sang

that song on TV years ago. Did he record that song?

A: "It Tickles" was a number 5 hit for Tommy Collins in 1955. The Buck Owens

version was in his 1964 "Buck Owens Sings Tommy Collins" album.



Q: I think Chet Atkins was the greatest guitar player ever. Can you tell

me why he isn't in the hall of fame?

A Chet Atkins was inducted into The Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1973.



Q: There was a song on the radio years ago about "Goody Goody Gumdrops." Do

you know who had that record?

A: "Goody Goody Gumdrops" was a number 24 hit for The Wilburn Brothers in

1967.

STRIP TEASE.*

There are professions that have just disappeared, for instance...

Milkman, iceman, typist, switchboard operator, and strip tease dancer.



Todays strippers are not the same.

Strip Tease artists did not come out naked and give it all away at once.

They came on stage wearing fancy outfits with sequins, feathers, veils,

and bangles, whatever they are.



They started by wearing stuff, and took at least fifteen minutes to get it all

off.

Thats why they called it tease.

They could have made it last longer by adding a parka and galoshes.



They were usually accompanied by a motley collection of itinerant musicians

called a house band, another vanished line of work,

and they left their G-string on at the end to avoid getting arrested.



House bands have become extinct.

The bad part about that is that I made extra money

writing house band arrangements for strippers.

Usually something like sixteen choruses of "Hindustan".



I played piano in one of those joints in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I had a music light on top of the piano, and the girls, with their backs to the

crowd,

would come to my piano light and face me when taking their tops off.

I hit a lot of bad notes.



One night the star of the show, a dancer called "Jett",

pulled down the back of her G-string and mooned the audience on her way out.

Even the sax player woke up.



Other than that it was a lousy job.*

Gram Parsons died in Joshua Tree, CA _1973_, from a drug overdose. A

few days later, Gram's manager "Phil Coffman," stole the body from the local

airport. The body was driven to Joshua Tree National Park by Coffman, soaked in

gasoline, and cremated on the ground. Coffman was arrested, and paid a $300.00

misdemeanor fine, for the theft of the casket.





Lee Greenwood debuted on the charts with "It Turns Me Inside Out"

1981.





John Denver testified before a Senate hearing committee in regard to pornography

in music 1985.





Tommy Collins, A. L. "Doodle" Owens, Wayne Kemp, and Glenn Sutton, inducted NSHF

1999.





The Nashville Network, TNN, owned and operated by the Gaylord group, announced

they were leaving country music, and changed their name to The National Network

in _2000_.





Mercury Nashville released Terri Clark's album "Fearless" 2000.





Slim Dusty, "David Gordon Kirkpatrick," age 76, died in Sydney Australia

2003.

*At the other end of my life...when I was growing up and just beginning

the journey, I was oblivious as to what I might become, what direction I would

follow, what plan did God have in store for Stan Hitchcock....*



I am a firm believer in the notion that God has a plan for every life, I don't

believe in luck or happenstance, I believe that there is a way that we are meant

to follow, and only our own bull-headedness sometimes causes us to get

sidetracked.*



Looking back, from this vantage point, it is easier to discern the Hand Of God

directing my path. It's also apparent the times when I was bull-headed and tried

to go in a different direction and God had to draw me back. Just like any Father

working with a headstrong child, teaching that child that submission to a

Father's Love is the proper course. Sometimes the child gives in to the Love,

other times they rebel and the result is hurt...it hurts the child and it hurts

the Father. So it is with our Heavenly Father, after all we are made in His

image. *



I am Thankful that God chose me for a life of Music. He put a song in my heart

and it has never left me. When Denise and I first met, 29 years ago, she noticed

that I seemed to always have my foot tapping to some beat that no one else could

hear. She decided that I was tapping to the rhythm of the Universe...but, I knew

I was merely keeping time to the song that was going through my mind at the

time, and would continue to be softly playing, at all hours of the day or night.

I finally realized that this was my God's gift of music, the music energy that

would drive me for all of my life. And when the music stops....so will I. The

song will have been sung. *



A life that has a purpose, is a life without boredom. There is always a

challenge to meet, another adventure to share....another song to sing. *



Thank you Lord, for creating me with the purpose of Music. *
