STORY BEHIND THE SONG*

*

*

According to many songwriters - some songs are written in just a matter of

minutes - while others take days or months or sometimes even years - to

complete.

According to Don Schlitz - Kenny Rogers' 1978 blockbuster - "The Gambler," - or

most of it - was written in one afternoon.

Schlitz commented, "I was still thinking of an "open D chord" that Bob McDill

had just shown me on his guitar so I walked the two miles from Bobs office back

to my apartment, sat down at my computer and wrote three songs, and "The

Gambler" was one of the three although I didnt quite finish it that day.

Schlitz later finished the song and recorded a demo on it but nobody wanted to

record it. So his publisher released the demo on The Crazy Momma label and

Capitol Records picked up the master. In the meantme, Conway Twitty's son,

Charlie Tango - recorded the song - as did Hugh Moffatt. But amidst all the

activity - the Schitz recording fared the best - peaking at number 65.

A day before a scheduled recording session - producer Larry Butler played the

song to Kenny Rogers and after a couple of changes it became Kenny's fifth

number one.

Rogers' United Artists version of "The Gambler" came on the country music charts

October 28th, 1978 and was in the top slot on December 16th and stuck there for

three weeks.*

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q: I heard on the radio that Loretta Lynn canceled activities at her ranch.

Is she ill?

A: Loretta has postponed her Bi-Annual Trail Ride at her Hurricane Mills,

Tennessee ranch - due to recent storm damage and fire damage to the ranch's

kitchen.

Q: I have always been a big fan of Glaser Brothers music and was sorry to

hear of Tompall's passing. Did he have any hits without his brothers?

A: Tompall scored 8 chart singles from 1973 thru 1978. Brother Chuck had one

charted song in 1974 and brother Jim placed 22 songs on the country charts from

1968 thru 1986. As a trio - The Glaser Brothers scored 22 charted songs from

1966 thru 1982.

Q: According to my daughter- the members of Alabama are going into a

songwriter's hall of fame. Do you have any information?

A: Alabama's Randy Owen will be inducted into The Nashville Songwriter's Hall

Of Fame on October 13th.

Q: The radio folks mentioned Dolly Parton being up for a "mainstream"

award. What is that?

A: Dolly Parton, Martina McBride and Reba McEntire have been nominated for

the Mainstream artist award for the 2013 Inspirational Country Music Awards.

Q: My brother-in-law has a cassette tape of Lefty Frizzell singing a song

about "What Good Did You Get Out Of Breaking My Heart?" None of the music stores

or radio stations know anything about that song. Do you have any information?

A: That song was a track in Lefty's 1964 "Saginaw, Michigan" album.

Q: On one of the old TV shows, Ray Price sang a song about "You Done Me

Wrong." Was that a record and if so when?

A: "You Done Me Wrong" scored a # 7 hit in 1956 for Price. It was the

flipside of his number one, "Crazy Arms."

MUSIC LAWYERS NEEDED. *

By: Jack Blanchard

The music business is rough enough.

Now the big guys have discovered a new way

to screw the folks who actually make the music.

Every label that has released recordings we wrote,

performed, produced, and published, are claiming ownership.

That gives us a hard time on UTUBE and other big music sites.

Some of these record companies just claim ownership of everything,

even on "various artists" compilations.

We've never sold any of these songs and/or recordings to anybody.

We only lease the masters to them for use on their product.

They dont own any of it.

We think even CDBABY is doing it to us.

We put a couple of albums on CDBABY to sell CDs and downloads.

That's all.

They have no right to claim ownership!

It's too easy for these big companies to claim ownership.

It costs tham nothing.

So what have they got to lose?

They're only robbing artists and musicians

who don't have the means to fight back

I spent four hours on UTUBE last night fighting this crap.

These companies have deep pockets filled with money.

They should be sued.

A class action suit would be best,

to fight for the many other artists who are getting ripped off.

We do need a lawyer. Any takers?
