STORY BEHIND THE SONG*

*

*

Some hit songs took months and even years to write while others were completed

in just a few minutes AND others were actually written during the actual

recording session!

And according to songwriter Even Stevens - Eddie Rabbitt's 1978 number one "I

Just Want To Love You" was one of the latter.

Steven's commented, "when we went into the studio we only had half a chorus and

half a verse written to that song. And we had just written those about 15

minutes earlier at the office while we were waiting on time to go to the

studio."

Eddie Rabbitt's Elektra Record single "I Just Want To Love You" entered the

country music charts September 30th, 1978 and was at the top of the charts on

December 2nd.

The session was produced by David Malloy and the song was written by Malloy,

Eddie Rabbitt and Even Stevens.

Eddie Rabbitt placed 43 songs on the country music charts from 1974 thru 1991.

He died in 1998 at age 56.*

THE PIANO MAN.*

By: Jack Blanchard

Jackie Ball was a great pianist and a wino.

He looked like a skid row bum and played like Art Tatum.

He used to wander in and out of Hollywood bars,

playing for wine and maybe a buck tip.

Once, when a bar patron moaned

that his wife would give him hell for coming home late,

I heard Jackie mumble,

"I wish somebody cared that much about me".

The story was that Jackie's wife was addicted to men,

and left him for a bunch of other guys.

Jackie loved the wrong person too much,

and hit the skids.

He became a mean, sarcastic old alcoholic

who gave the townspeople a daily surprise

by being alive while looking dead.

He lived in his old Dodge convertible that had no top,

and in rainy weather he slept in water.

He consented to give me a few advanced piano lessons

because I was "the only sonofabitch that ever asked".

Somehow age had slowed down his ex-wife's activities

and she agreed to try again with him.

He quit drinking, got some teeth, took a bath,

and rejoined her in Buffalo.

He was becoming a model citizen,

when he died six months later during a hernia operation.

I never did get the lessons.

He knew some tricks, chords, and technique

that I would like to have learned.

Too bad he never made any records.

The world missed out.

I guess the moral here is:

Genius alone doesn't make you lucky.

View From The River Bank-*

With Stan Hitchcock *

*

I love the early morning time, when the world seems like it's just waking up,

stretching a little bit, taking a deep breath and saying, "Ok, we are ready for

whatever comes, bring it on." *

*

Back in my traveling music days, when I had been driving all night and the Sun

was just beginning to crack the horizon, I would find a place to pull over, get

out, take that deep breath and get ready for the new day of challenges. Reckon,

after awhile, it becomes ingrained in your daily life. *

*

And, that first cup of coffee is about as good as it gets. The anticipation of

listening to it perk, starting to smell the fresh coffee aroma, finally you

can't wait any longer and just grab the pot and drink it right out of the hot

pot...yessir, you gotta be tough to do that. Uh, you may not want to try that at

home...it is only for us professional coffee drinkers with cast iron throats.

*

*

I always know, the very act of waking up to a new day...is God's biggest

blessing. A new day is like an artist with a fresh sheet of art paper, what you

paint on the paper is up to you, might as well make it a Rembrandt day. *
